IT GIRLS ROCK | Teen Ballerina Michaela Deprince

Everyday I look around, be it at work, on the internet, or in everyday life, for different forms of inspiration and motivation. Reading about young women that fight paralyzing odds to pursue their dreams really help keep me on track with the things I want to accomplish in life.

Michaela Deprince, a beautiful teenage ballerina, has overcome odds that you and I will never have to experience and is still proudly standing. She is the epitome of inspiration.

According to an article recently published on Teen Vogue’s online magezine, Michaela, a native of Sierra Leone, was orphaned at an early age after the violent death of both of her parents. Daily life in the orphanage was filled with threats of death from waring rebels and she even witnessed the horrific murder of one of her caregivers. The only thing that gave Michaela hope was a picture of a ballerina she found on the fence of her orphanage’s play yard; a picture that she still holds on to today.

After being adopted by a New Jersey couple, Michaela was quickly enrolled into beginner ballet classes but again faced racial prejudice by her instructors and classmates alike. This to she overcame with ease and grace using her past as “a source of strength.”

“I take what’s in my past and put it in my body. My life is proof that no matter what situation you’re in, as long as you have a supportive family, you can achieve anything.”– Michaela Deprince, Teen Vogue

Why is everyone forgetting to say that Michaela DePrince is being written about in the press specifically because of a new dance documentary called FIRST POSITION, which she appears in (along with 6 other talented aspiring dancers). It has won many awards and is playing in theaters around the country. In the film Michaela speaks in great detail about how much she has overcome to make it where she is today. The uplifting movie’s website is BalletDocumentary.com

What a great way to start a monday morning! Thank you for sharing this piece. As someone who studied ballet for 15years, i know firsthand that it requires a special kind of dedication. To be this committed, given her painful loss, says a lot. She’s a beauty and without a doubt, she will be a success.
