I was pursuing the racks at Target one day when this hint of purple caught my sight.  On the clearance rack, hidden between a pair of black leggings, and  green sweater, I spotted this purple dress that just so happened to in my size.  I was instantly attracted to the richness of the hue coupled with the silkiness of the material and I knew I just had to have it.

Because color blocking is so hot right now, I decided to pair the dress with colorful accessories and neutral shoes.

Yield: 8 servings

  • 3 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup graham cracker crumbs
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 punds cream cheese
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 pints blackberries
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 4 eggs
  • Zest and juice of 1 lemon
 
  1. Preheat oven to 350°.  Grease a 9-inch springform pan with 1 tablespoon of the butter.  Mix the graham cracker crumbs with the remaining 2 tablespoons butter in a medium sized bowl.  Press onto the bottom and halfway up the sides of the pan.
  2. In a large bowl, use a handheld mixer to combine the cream cheese with the sugar until smooth.  Blend in the milk then beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing just enough to incorporate.  Mix in the sour cream, flour, and vanilla until smooth.  Divide the mixture between 2 bowls.
  3. In a food processor or blender, puree 1 pint of the blackberries with the lemon zest and juice.  Pour the puree into one bowl with the cheese mixture along with the remaining 1/2 pint of whole blackberries and mix well.
  4. Pour the blackberry filling on top of the prepared crust.  Bake for 10 minutes.  Remove the pan from the oven and pour the remaining filling over the top.  Return to the oven and bake for 1 hour, until the topping is set.  Chill in the refrigerator until ready to serve.
According to the comments on the original recipe’s website…
  • This recipe makes a huge amount of filling so you may need to either use a 11-inch pan, in which you will need to make more crust, or you can simply save the extra filling to make mini-cheescake poppers.
  • The topping for the cheesecake is not listed but it does look like a basic cream topping.  You can easily create your own by combining 8 oz of sour cream with 2 tablespoons of sugar and a splash of vanilla.
  • Some people felt the need to increase cooking time to 1.5-2 hours total.
  • If the batter is too runny, you can try adding more cream cheese or less eggs to make it more firm.

Now at that time, paying more then a few bucks for a lipstick was hard on my teenage pockets, however, I’d heard so much about the brand that I was willing to part with the money to get MAC into my then tiny makeup collection.

Well here I am years later still wearing MAC lip colors with most of my makeup looks.  I have tested and collected quite a few and have managed to pick out 6 colors that I keep in heavy rotation.

Bare Again:

A pink toned neutral beige lipstick that goes well with everyday makeup looks.

Velvet Teddy:

A deep matte beige that I LOVE to pair with smokey black eyeshadow.

Creme Cup:

A blue-pink lipstick that goes well with almost any eyeshadow look.

Up the Amp:

A lavender violet color that looks amazing with both lavender and hot pink lip gloss.

.

Ruby Woo:

A matte, vivid red color that is amazing for a hot night out with friends or that special someone.

Pink Nouveau:

A bright pink lipstick that I love to pair with neutral eyeshadow and winged black eyeliner.  This one is a real head turner.

I chose to keep my outfit sleek and simple for the extravagance I was going to experience.  I paired a light gray linen t-shirt from Zara with a pair of form fitting black cigarette pants from Express, a pair of lace open toed booties from Aldo, and a studded black purse from Agaci.

  1. Keep your request simple.  Remember that your host still has a household to maintain even during your stay.  Try to be respectful of this by keeping your food and accommodation requests simple.
  2. Lend a hand.  It is not cool to expect your host to do all of the work. Help clear the dinner table, offer to wash dishes, and one day, prepare a light lunch.
  3. Have your own itinerary.  Your host may or not be interested in serving as a local tour guide so it is essential that you have your own agenda mapped out before traveling.
  4. Keep your space tidy.  Traveling to someone else’s home is not the optimal time to let your inner clutter-bug shine through.  Make sure you keep your bedroom, bathroom, and any other living space as tidy as possible.
  5. Do not overstay your welcome.  Stick to your departure date and time as much as possible.  If a longer stay is inevitable, let your host know as soon as possible.  Be prepared to spring for your own hotel accommodations if your host is unable to extend their hospitality for the extra days.
  6. Send a thank you note.  Hand written thank you notes are a simple, cost effective, and a very effective way to express gratitude to your host.

This week was so hard for me because I developed a nasty cold that kept me from my day job, and from blogging like I really wanted to.  The only thing that kept me going was a ton of throat lozenges, the love and care of my sweetie, and an über fab song from this new sultry-sounding Atlanta based girl group called The Yes Ma’ams.  Their song “Only If I Say So” kept me feeling ferociously feminine on the inside even though my outside was…well…you get the point.

This weekend I am going to really focus on pampering myself back into the swing of things. I’m thinking a manicure and pedicure at my favorite nail salon, and maybe a mini shopping spree.
